Downton Abbey in Newbury (England)
During one of my trips to London, I had the opportunity to visit “Downton Abbey” or, to be more precise, Highclere Castle in Newbury, a 50-minute train ride from Paddington station in central London.
Newbury is halfway between London and Oxford. Visiting both Highclere Castle and Oxford is a good plan if you want to spend a nice day outside of the big smoke.
I always wanted to visit the castle, not only because I’m a fan of the TV series but I also because I like the aristocratic environment that takes back in time. Built in 1842, the Highclere Castle offers visitors the environment and has many stories to tell.
For instance, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon turned it into an hospital to receive the injured from Flanders. It has also been home to children evacuated from London during World War II. And, curiously, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon…
